Step-parent Adoption

This is the adoption of a spouse’s child with the spouse’s consent.  Step-parent adoptions also require the consent of the non-custodial parent, unless the court finds grounds to involuntarily terminate the parental rights of the non-custodial parent.

A full home study is not required, but an investigation with fingerprint clearances must be completed by a local public agency, a licensed therapist, a licensed social worker, or a licensed adoption agency. The child must also be interviewed to ensure understanding of the adoption plan, and must consent to the adoption if age 12 or older.
